Where to Stay in Flagstaff
When choosing where to stay in Flagstaff you may not find luxury resort hotels but cozy family-run guesthouses and several historic downtown hotels.
If you’re looking for luxury resorts and spas then stay in Sedona. What Flagstaff offers is a more authentic American stay. There are several historic downtown hotels, which have been here almost as long as Flagstaff itself.
There are also numerous charming little bed and breakfasts, inns, and guesthouses, both in the city and right in among the beautiful scenery around it. In addition, if you want convenience without too much expense, there are countless chain hotels and cheap motels, offering basic, comfortable rooms at a low price. Some of them are even on Route 66.
Weatherford Hotel
One of the oldest downtown hotels is the Weatherford Hotel, whose history goes back to 1897 when John Weatherford arrived in Flagstaff. He opened the hotel on January 1st, 1900, and it has been in business ever since. It boasted the city’s first telephone, and has hosted cowboys and politicians, with one notable guest being the western writer Zane Grey. Today it has a bar and grille, Charly’s, with regular live music… and a ghost!
Hotel Monte Vista
Also in the heart of downtown is the Hotel Monte Vista, which opened in 1927. Since then it has welcomed many famous guests, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Gary Cooper, Alan Ladd, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Michael J. Fox, and Freddie Mercury. It has 50 rooms and suites, and they all have views of this historic part of Flagstaff.
England House Bed & Breakfast
One of the oldest bed and breakfasts in Flagstaff is England House, also downtown. It started business in about 1902 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. While it has 19th century French antique furniture it also provides high-speed wifi access, and arriving guests are greeted with a glass of wine or a beer, and a tour of the historic building.
Starlight Pines Bed and Breakfast
If you want a more rural setting, but still close to downtown, there are many good choices. With only four rooms, guests get a very personal welcome at Starlight Pines, a Victorian-style house that is only a 10-minute drive to downtown Flagstaff. The best room is the Lily Room, whose private balcony has a great view of the 9300ft (2600m) Mt. Elden. Phone: (928) 527-1912.
